Overview
During the school year we usually meet once a month as a whole pack on a Tuesday night from 6:30-8pm.
Dens typically meet 7 times during the school year on on days that are organized by the den leaders - often on weekends.
Cub Scouts at OLG is open to boys and girls, 1st grade to 5th grade. Older students should checkout the OLG Scout Troop
Common pack events for us include:
Kick-off night - Air Rockets!
Egg drop with the fire department - Great STEM activity!
Fall day camp - Climbing, Archery and more!
Volunteering at Feed My Starving Children
Special guests
Winter day camp
Hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser
Sledding
Pinewood derby
Family weekend camp
Weekend summer camp - swimming, archery, BB guns, camp fires and more!
In addition to all that, dens have their own meetings (~7) to work on activities toward their next badge. Basically they run around with friends learning about topics ranging from faith, emergency personnel, flag etiquette, tool usage and safety, outdoor cooking, fire safety, outdoor survival, healthy habits, pocket knife safety and how to camp.
Dues
Dues for being a Cub Scout are $205. You can register here https://www.adventureiscalling.org/join/Pack-3102. A small amount of the registration fee goes back to the Pack and are used to buy materials (book, neckerchief, advancement awards, etc.) for the Cubs. The rest of our expenses are covered by the money raised at our annual pancake breakfast.
Uniform
Cubs are encouraged to wear their Cub Scout uniform to our events.
Our uniform is basically a blue Cub Scout shirt for 1st - 3rd, and tan shirt for 4th -5th, which can be purchased at a Scout Shop https://www.northernstar.org/shop - there is a shop at the Fort Snelling Base Camp. A Cub Scout belt is also handy for grades 1-3 to hold their belt loops that they collect as they complete adventures.
Go to the shop, tell the staff you're with Pack 3102 (they can look us up as well) and your child's grade and that you need a shirt (and a belt for 1st -3rd) (we provide the neckerchief and slide). 1st-3rd, wear the blue shirt, 4th & 5th transition to the brown shirt when they outgrow their blue shirt or want to upgrade.
The shop can sew the patches on (takes a few days or more), or you can get Badge Magic (a sticker like material) at the shop and add any badges they suggest yourself.
Shirts are about $33. Belt $15. And then there are some badges too. Some cubs get hats, a couple get pants. And again, we provide the neckerchief and slide.
!!! Typically Tigers buy shirts a size or two too big as they'll typically use them for the next 3+ years.
Neckerchiefs and slides get lost and can be a distraction, wear them if you got them, but if it gets lost, don't sweat it, or you can get a replacement at the scout shop.
Attendance
We understand that our families have a lot of activities going on- missing events due to conflicts is expected, but the more that can join, the better it is for everyone. There are online resources to do the activities (or they are in the book too) should you need to do them on your own.
Audience
We are open to all families in our community and being a student or parishioner at OLG is not required. Cub Scouts and Scouts is open to boys and girls.
Siblings are usually welcome to join our events - it often makes it easier on the parents to bring younger siblings who usually find friends to run around with.
Cub Scouts & Scouts is not "Girl Scouts". If you are interested in Girl Scouts, you can contact the OLG school office https://www.olgschool.net/.
Fundraising
To pay for our activities, achievements, supplies, etc. we host a pancake breakfast fundraiser at OLG in January. It's a lot of work, but we all get to do it together and it's a highlight of the school year that kicks off Catholic Schools Week and it's a great opportunity to get to know each other more - and that's often the most rewarding part of Cub Scouts for parents.
Scholarships
Don't let money keep you from participating - if that's a concern, let's talk, no biggie.
How do you get involved?!
Don't just drop your cub off, if you can avoid it. Stick around at the Pack and Den meetings. Hang out with other parents. Join in the mix of cubs and lend a hand. Help manage the cubs and help the Den leader - they're just parents like you.
Join our leadership team - basically a group of parents like you who can help run the den, or do our finances, help plan camping events, etc.
Den Leader - each den could use 2-3 den leaders. Generally it involves:
There's a leader meeting about 2 weeks before the pack meeting where we plan pack meetings and other events - attendance is not required, but helpful. It takes place at OLG, online or a restaurant.
Join the monthly pack meeting
Plan and execute ~7 den meetings to go over your adventures for your rank - basically one a month. We have access to OLG facilities and we're happy to help you set up the schedule and provide examples of what has worked in the past
It's quite rewarding, frightening sure, but a it's really a wonderful way to get involved in our community and get to know your cub's classmates and families.
Finally...
We have an active and vibrant pack. If you are interested in more information, please reach out to us.
